My internet is slow, sometimes it takes ages to load a simple page or to send an email. How can I fix it?

Let's go through 3 steps that can help:

1. We have to stop background applications and services that could be hogging up all your bandwidth. If you use Windows, click on the upwards facing arrow on the bottom right section of your screen known as the notification area of your taskbar. Right click and close or exit any programs you are not using. If you're using an Apple Mac machine, open Activity Monitor, click the Network tab, and click Sent Bytes or Rcvd Bytes to sort the list of apps by how much data you’re sending or receiving. Turn off or change settings on apps that are overdoing it.

2. We need to remove all the malware and viruses that could have attached themselves to your browser. Go to your Settings, and select Add Ons/Extensions. Delete or disable everything you don't recognize.

3. Finally, you may need to just upgrade to a better internet connection. ZOL Fibroniks gives you the speed and stability of fibre internet.

How can I get my printer to work?

For people who regularly use computers, a printer is probably the source of more headaches than anything else in your work day. "The printer is connected but nothing's printing" is a very common question faced by IT helpdesks all over the world.

How can you get your printer to work? Well here's three suggestions:

  1. Make sure the printer is indeed connected. Check your printer cable and if necessary, try a different cable or a different USB port. If your printer is connected wirelessly, check to make sure that both your laptop and printer are not only connected but on the same network.
  2. In the system tray of your computer, double click on the Windows printer to open up the print queue. Check to make sure there are no print jobs that are holding up the printing. Clear them to make sure your print job goes to the front of the queue.
  3. Make sure your printer software is up-to-date. Check the model of your printer and download the relevant printer drivers for that particular printer. Often printer manufacturers will periodically put out fixes and patches for any bugs in their printer software, so make sure you have the latest drivers installed on your computer.

I accidentally deleted some files, can I get them back?

It's probably happened to all of us; somehow we delete that important document or photo.

These steps assume you have NOT set up backup services like Crashplan for Africa on your machine.

1. Your file may simply be in The Recycle Bin

  • You can search the Recycle Bin using the search box at the top-right corner of the window
  • Or right-click in the window, point to Sort By, and select Date Deleted to view files that were recently deleted.

2. Windows Shadow Copy Services.

Previous versions are copies of files and folders that Windows automatically saves as part of a restore point, sometimes referred to as shadow copies.

  • Click the Start button, then Computer
  • Find the folder that used to contain the deleted file or folder, right-click it, and then click Restore previous versions

You'll see a list of available previous versions of the file or folder

3. If the above 2 options are unavailable, you have one option left to you. File recovery.

You may be able to recover the file using any of the numerous file recovery software available on the internet. If it's REALLY serious, find yourself a professional data recovery company like ZOL Geeks who are available on 08677 123 123
